RNDr. Boris Klempa, DrSc. (1976) works as a lead research scientist at the Institute of Virology, Biomedical Centre of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (BMC SAS). He chairs the Scientific Board of the BMC SAS and is a member of the Scientific Board of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava. He is an internationally respected expert in ecology and molecular epidemiology of zoonotic viruses transmissible to humans, especially from rodents, other small mammals and ticks. He studied biology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava. He received his PhD from Humboldt University in Berlin, where he worked at the Charité University Clinic for eighteen years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he and his team at the Biomedical Centre of SAS have actively participated in the fight against the pandemic in a variety of ways, from routine testing, through the development of RT-PCR tests, validation of new forms of sampling, to the genetic characterisation of new virus variants. In addition, he has been actively involved in raising public awareness and in the vaccination campaign.
